Réine

Maewyn's mother. She is a continuous thread of memories, history, and mystery for Maewyn to solve throughout the story.

Réine was the previous queen of a nation thousands of years ago, and gave up everything to save her children: Maewyn and her twin brother Drystan. They were born under the knowledge of a prophecy that cited that the combined magic of two powerful twins would change the structure of their world -- for good or bad, that depended on how the magic was wielded. Knowing this, Réine sacrificed herself to keep her children safe, and in doing so, ensured that that power would not fall into the wrong hands. This involved splitting the twins apart, keeping them that way for thousands of years. In the wake of a violent coup, her husband dead, and she alone with two newborns, Réine made the choice that would preserve that magic for thousands of years to come. She was eventually caught by those who enacted the violent coup, ensuring her sad fate, but her children were safe. A goddess took hold of her children and promised their safety, stealing them from their mother just days after their birth.

Réine loved her children, and everything she did was for them, including abandoning them. The poem in the center of her collage reflects her feelings of love she had for her children, and also foreshadows her fate long after she is dead: what she turns into and how she finds ways to reconnect to her children, despite the barrier between the living and the dead. The letter on the bottom right is meant to signify how she wrote letters to her children before she died, whether or not she was certain if they would ever see them.

She passed down her magic affinity for nature and the natural world to her daughter, something she deemed sacred and near ritualistic, something she would never use for violence. That is why her collage page is full of bright colors and shiny flowers, as well as lovely pastels of green and pink: it reflects who Réine was, and how she treated the world around her.
